“Foreign Minister Michael Pompeo met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi in Brussels on Thursday on the sidelines of the NATO summit,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Neuert said in a press statement.
During the meeting, Pompeo stressed the support of the United States for the Iraqi people and our common fight against Da’ash. The minister also welcomed Iraq’s request for additional support from NATO as well as full support for the coalition’s Iraq training mission during the summit.
“The foreign minister expressed his support for the strong cooperation between the international coalition and the Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga, in the ongoing battle against Dahesh and praised the efforts of Prime Minister Abbadi in the ongoing military operations to protect Iraq’s borders and sovereignty.”
“The minister also noted the recent efforts to ensure the integrity of the parliamentary elections and encouraged the prime minister and all Iraqi leaders to act quickly towards a moderate government that reflects the will of all the Iraqi people,” Noir said.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Haider Abadi visited Brussels for two days (Wednesday and Thursday) to attend a meeting of the International Alliance in conjunction with the summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
On the sidelines of the NATO summit, Abadi met with a number of leaders, heads of government, foreign ministers and other officials, discussed with them bilateral relations and supported Iraq’s efforts in reconstruction and security cooperation and intelligence in the pursuit of the remnants of an advocate.
The press office of the Iraqi prime minister did not indicate any meeting at the summit between Abadi and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, contrary to what the US State Department published pictures of the meeting.
