MP Mohammed al-Bayati revealed on Monday that the true size of the 2027 budget deficit and the initial estimates for external or internal borrowing remain unknown. He indicated that all current discussions are mere speculation.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Bayati explained, “The true size of the 2027 budget deficit and the initial estimates for external or internal borrowing are still unknown.” He added, “Everything currently circulating is speculation because the budget details have not yet reached Parliament.”
He emphasized that “the 2027 budget is crucial and comes at a difficult financial juncture for Iraq due to the repercussions of current regional events.”
Al-Bayati further stated that “the estimates being put forward by some regarding the size of the deficit are based on speculation and conjecture. Nothing official has been received to confirm that the deficit is specified in figures, and the external or internal borrowing figures also remain speculative.”
He pointed out that “the budget is still within the government, awaiting a vote, before being sent to the House of Representatives for discussions within the parliamentary finance committee. This will provide a clearer picture of the budget deficit and external borrowing.”
Al-Bayati emphasized that “the budget will be extremely difficult, especially given the numerous outstanding payments owed to various segments of the population that must be settled.” He added, “Given the challenging financial situation, we anticipate some tough decisions will be made.”
He noted, “We expect the budget to be finalized within the Cabinet over the next two weeks, after which it will be referred to the House of Representatives, giving us a clearer picture.”
