Former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi expressed, on Monday, his regret at assigning Mustafa Al-Kazemi to head the National Intelligence Service during 2016, indicating that if he had the current data, he would have taken a different decision regarding granting the intelligence presidency to Al-Kazemi.

Al-Abadi said in a televised interview, followed by Al-Maalouma, that “the assignment of Mustafa Al-Kazemi during 2016 came for the requirements of the public interest and a solution to the demands of all parties for the position,” noting that “if I had the current data, I would have taken a different decision regarding granting the intelligence presidency to Al-Kazemi.”

He added, “The Sadrist movement was part of the coordination framework and participated strongly in it before the 2021 elections. It suspended its presence in the framework’s meetings after withdrawing from the elections, and did not return after its return.”

He pointed out that “I do not have any ambition on a personal level to take over the prime minister for a new term, and I prefer to retire, and there is no veto on my name in assuming the presidency of the Council of Ministers.”

And in 2016, it was a surprise that the then Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi appointed a columnist and human rights activist to head the intelligence service.
