Iraq recently unveiled a locally manufactured combat vehicle identical to the Chinese version of the VN-22 6×6 armoured combat vehicle, marking a major development in its defence industry.

The Bulgarian Military website, which specializes in military affairs, stated in a report translated by the / Al-Maalouma / agency that “this model, which was revealed by the Chinese company Norinco in 2021, was designed as a standard armored vehicle capable of carrying out various combat missions. However, the Iraqi (VN-22) vehicle was modified to meet the specific requirements of the country’s armed forces.

He added that “this strategic initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance Iraq’s defense capabilities and establish an advanced defense industrial base. The primary goal of this effort is to meet the comprehensive needs of the Iraqi military and security forces, covering a wide range of weapons, equipment and ammunition.

“The original VN-22 is equipped with a remotely controlled combat station armed with a 30mm cannon, has a combat weight of 25 tons and can carry eight soldiers. The vehicle is designed to withstand 14.5mm rounds and is equipped with mine protection. However, the Iraqi version of the vehicle differs significantly in terms of armament. It is equipped with a manned combat station armed with a 12.7mm CS LM5 three-barreled machine gun manufactured by Norinco. This weapon is capable of firing between 1,000 and 2,000 rounds per minute, depending on the selected firing mode. In addition, the weapon is produced under license in Iraq, which emphasizes the local aspect of this production.”

The report continued, “In addition, the vehicle is equipped with ten smoke grenade launchers and an active protection system, providing additional defense against external threats. The vehicle’s hull is divided into three main sections: the front section houses the driver and engine, the middle section is designated for the commander and combat station operator, and the rear section accommodates up to eight mechanized infantry soldiers.”

It is noteworthy that “the local production of the (VN) 22 vehicle is part of the growing cooperation between Iraq and China, which extends beyond the military field. This relationship has deepened in recent years, especially in areas such as economic cooperation, infrastructure development, and energy. Since 2019, Chinese companies have been actively involved in the reconstruction of Iraq, especially in sectors such as oil, agriculture, and housing, with plans to build eight million homes in almost all of Iraq’s governorates.”
