After 9 months.. Al-Maliki brings Halbousi back to lifeShafaq News/ The State of Law Coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, revealed on Wednesday the possibility of amending the internal regulations of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, which is something that the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, has long called for, to allow the nomination of a candidate from his party to succeed him.

The representative of the State of Law, Aref Al-Hamami, told Shafak News Agency, “The statements issued by the Sunni blocs regarding the resolution of the issue of electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, prompted the Coordination Framework to arrange for a meeting at the level of its leadership in the coming days, to decide on the matter.”

Al-Hamami added, “Al-Maliki stressed the importance of continuing the dialogue to get out of the crisis and resolve the issue of electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives. If the political blocs agree to reopen nominations for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, the House is able to amend the internal regulations and reopen nominations again.”

Al-Hamami pointed out that “the session to elect the Speaker of Parliament will be held after the Arbaeen visit, but there is no specific date for the session to be held, unless the matter is decided.”

This comes after six Sunni parliamentary forces announced on Tuesday evening that they would nominate a new candidate to replace the dismissed Mohammed al-Halbousi as Speaker of Parliament, stressing that they have a parliamentary majority.

The parties and blocs, Progress, National Masses, National Decisiveness, Leadership, Iraqi National Project, and Initiative, stated in a joint statement received by Shafaq News Agency that they had reached an agreement on nominating a person for the presidency of the Council of Representatives.

According to information obtained by Shafaq News Agency, the candidate agreed upon by the six forces is Ziad al-Janabi, who is close to al-Halbousi.

The political forces are holding continuous dialogues and meetings among themselves to reach a solution to the problem of the presidency of the House of Representatives, which was delayed for more than nine months after the dismissal of Mohammed al-Halbousi in November 2023.
