Member of Parliament Hussein Mounes considered, on Monday, the presence of American forces in Iraq as absurd and worthless.
In a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, Mounes said, “The demands regarding the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq are truly constitutional and there is no justification for objecting to them,” noting that “the Iraqi state has no interest in the continued presence of these forces, whose presence now is absurd and worthless.”
He added that “the issue of ending this presence is essential and can never be compromised, and it is not possible to introduce it as a matter of sectarian or partisan compromise,” calling on “the political forces to preserve the country’s sovereignty and reject any presence, regardless of its type or form.”
He explained that “what Barzani’s representative stated about the continued presence of these forces is completely unacceptable and is intended to promote the idea that these forces came to protect Iraq,” indicating that “ending the presence of these forces is a constitutional and sovereign issue and cannot be ignored.”
He added, “These statements are a means of pressure on the government by some Sunni or Kurdish forces to maintain this presence, and they cannot be accepted under any name.”
In a provocative statement, days after Barzani’s visit, his advisor Khalida Khalil warned those calling for the withdrawal of American forces of a fate similar to that of Saddam and Gaddafi.
