Informed sources revealed on Saturday details of the telephone call that took place between US President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi last Thursday, indicating that Washington threatened to launch strong military strikes against armed factions and their leaders.
Sources told Shafaq News Agency that Trump informed al-Zaidi during the call that the United States would target armed factions and their leaders if they decided to participate in any war that might be renewed in the next phase in support of Iran.
She added that the US president expressed Washington’s readiness to provide various forms of support to Baghdad to proceed with the issue of restricting weapons to the state, stressing the need not to back down from this path or delay its implementation.
According to the sources, Trump stressed that any further backtracking or procrastination on the issue of restricting weapons would prompt Washington to reassess its level of support for al-Zaidi and his government.
These positions come at a time when Washington is intensifying its messages to the political forces and the Iraqi government regarding the issue of restricting weapons to the state. Informed political sources told Shafaq News Agency last week that the US Chargé d’Affaires to Iraq, Steven Fagin, had delivered direct messages in recent days to government and political figures, stressing that Washington is monitoring the steps taken to implement this issue.
In a related context, a source familiar with the inner workings of the Quartet Committee concerned with negotiating with the factions revealed a few days ago that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had intervened in the negotiations by holding separate meetings with some leaders of the groups refusing to hand over weapons.
The coordination framework had formed, more than two months ago, a tripartite committee that later became a quadripartite committee, with the aim of containing the repercussions of the issue of restricting weapons to the state, and the committee has engaged in a series of dialogues and discussions with the factions concerned with this issue during the past period.
The project to restrict weapons to the state does not have the consensus of the Iraqi factions, as the Al-Nujaba Movement, Kataib Hezbollah, and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, along with other factions, have announced their refusal to give up their military capabilities.
