Information/Baghdad –
Member of Parliament Amer Abdul-Jabbar called on the government Thursday to address the outstanding debts owed by mobile phone companies to resolve the liquidity crisis and ensure the payment of employee salaries. He urged the government to consider replacing defaulting companies and not renewing their licenses to compel them to settle their debts.
Abdul-Jabbar told the Information Agency, “The current government inherited a heavy burden of accumulated debt resulting from the policies of previous administrations and is facing real difficulties in financing and paying employee salaries.” He added, “The government should prioritize recovering the state’s outstanding dues from the private sector, especially telecommunications companies.”
He further stated, “These companies are reaping enormous profits at the expense of Iraqi citizens while providing extremely poor services, imposing high call rates and exorbitant card prices, without fulfilling their obligation to pay the massive debts they owe to the public treasury.”
He emphasized that “the government possesses a decisive bargaining chip to recover these funds by threatening not to renew the contracts of current companies and initiating the process of attracting and recruiting new international telecommunications companies as replacements,” asserting that “activating this measure will compel mobile phone companies to immediately settle their financial accounts and pay their debts to the state in full.”
