An informed parliamentary source revealed on Monday that the “Progress” party, headed by Mohammed al-Halbousi, is exerting intense political pressure to secure the position of head of the National Intelligence Service. The source confirmed that this move is facing widespread and categorical rejection from various political forces.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the Information Agency that “the efforts of the head of the Progress party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, to obtain the position of head of the intelligence service will not succeed, due to the desire of the majority of political forces to assign the position to an independent figure with high professionalism and no allegiance to any party or political bloc.”
The source added that “there is difficulty in agreeing on a candidate for the position at the present time,” suggesting that “the position will likely remain under the management of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi from a lower position for an extended period due to political disagreements stemming from the position’s sensitive security nature.”
