Gold prices stabilized on Monday near $4,000 an ounce, after posting their biggest weekly loss since last June, as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve meeting and assessed the impact of rising energy prices on inflation and interest rates.
Spot gold fell 0.1% to $3,993.20 an ounce, after declining more than 4% last week, while silver rose 0.5% to $54.12 an ounce.
Markets are awaiting the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision later this week, amid expectations that inflationary pressures stemming from rising energy prices will push for a tightening of monetary policy, which would increase pressure on gold, which does not yield returns.
Gold prices have fallen by about a quarter since the outbreak of the US-Iran war last February, due to tightening monetary expectations and some investments shifting towards bonds, while platinum and palladium have recorded a slight increase.
