The Reconstruction and Development bloc, which is linked to former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, decided on Monday to suspend its attendance at the House of Representatives sessions, and stipulated that a deputy be referred to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee before it would return.
The bloc said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “The Reconstruction and Development parliamentary bloc is following with great condemnation and rejection the systematic violations and irresponsible behaviors that some MPs insist on pursuing, which represent a blatant deviation from the principles of parliamentary work and the rules of political competition, and fall within the framework of malicious smear campaigns and the systematic targeting of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition and its leadership.”
She added, “Throughout the past period, the bloc has been keen to rise above responding and to prioritize the language of wisdom and dialogue. At the same time, it submitted an official memorandum to the Speaker of the House of Representatives demanding that the concerned MP be referred to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee. However, no practical measures were taken, which encouraged him to persist in his abuses. This today requires the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his two deputies to take a firm and responsible stance that puts an end to these practices.”
“Accordingly, the Reconstruction and Development parliamentary bloc announces the suspension of its attendance at the House of Representatives sessions, and will not resume its participation except by applying the legal procedures in accordance with the internal regulations of the council, in a way that ensures the cessation of these violations, preserves the dignity of parliamentary work, and maintains the respect of the political forces and their leaders.”
The bloc accuses some MPs of attacking its leader, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, through the media.
