The governor of Muthanna, Tawfiq al-Hassani, announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zidi has approved funding for the construction of facilities and buildings at the al-Jumaimah border crossing with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on a design and implementation (turnkey) basis.
The governor confirmed in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the rehabilitation of the road linking the city of Samawah and the Al-Jumaimah border crossing, in conjunction with the approval to implement the facilities and buildings of the crossing, represents an important step towards completing the requirements for its opening, which will contribute to revitalizing trade and strengthening the economic situation in the governorate, as well as providing an opportunity for Al-Muthanna to benefit from the revenues of the border crossings in accordance with the approved legal frameworks.
Al-Hassani pointed out that the opening of the port represents one of the important files within the government program for the governorate, indicating that the local government, in cooperation with the head and members of the governorate council, is working to intensify efforts and complete the necessary requirements to expedite its completion and entry into service, due to its economic and developmental importance, and the opportunities it provides to support commercial activity and achieve a positive return for the people of Al-Muthanna.
Iraq is linked to Saudi Arabia via two land crossings: Arar, which was opened in 2020 after being closed for about 29 years, and is located within the borders of Anbar Governorate. The second crossing is Al-Jumaimah from the south, located within the desert of Al-Muthanna Governorate, and historically it is considered a major pilgrimage route. Baghdad and Riyadh are preparing to open it in 2027.
