The Secretary of the Kurdistan Socialist Party, Mohammed Haji Mahmoud, called on Saturday for reliance on the agricultural sector to strengthen the economy of the Kurdistan Region, while warning against attempts by political parties to amend the permanent Iraqi constitution.
Haji Mahmoud, popularly known as “Kaka Hama,” said in a speech opening the fourth “Kulkhana” forum in Halabja Governorate that “the region is facing two economic paths: either self-reliance or total dependence on Baghdad,” noting that “dependence on the capital means becoming mere clerks at the Federal Ministry of Finance, which we review daily to submit lists of employees.”
He added: “Despite geographical constraints such as the lack of sea outlets, the occasional halt in oil exports, and the limited heavy industries, the agricultural sector is capable of bridging this gap and achieving economic self-sufficiency if it is invested in as required.”
In the political file, the Secretary of the Socialist Party warned against tampering with the constitution, stressing that “any constitutional amendment will directly harm the Kurdistan Region and the rights of its people.”
Haji Mahmoud called on the Kurdish forces to unite and activate the “three governorates veto” option to prevent any move targeting constitutional amendment.
