An official source in Anbar province revealed on Friday that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi had made unannounced contacts with al-Julani, ahead of an expected visit to Syria, amid talk of understandings and agreements whose details have not yet been clarified.
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “Al-Zaydi held intensive talks with Al-Julani to discuss possible positions and understandings,” noting that “the talks took place in an atmosphere of secrecy without revealing further details about the objectives of the anticipated visit.”
He added that “the visit to Damascus may take place in the next few days despite opposition to this step,” noting that “an unannounced telephone call took place between the two sides in conjunction with preparations for the visit.”
He noted that “the invitation extended to al-Zaydi to visit Syria came hours after US envoy Tom Barrack met with al-Julani in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”
The source explained that “the United States played a role in bringing the two sides closer together for reasons that were transparently self-serving.”
