The head of the National Security Service, Bassem al-Badri, confirmed on Tuesday that Iraq’s vision is based on restricting weapons to the state and distancing the country from the politics of competing regional and global axes.

This came in a speech he delivered on the sidelines of his participation in the Global Security Forum held in the Qatari capital, Doha, under the slogan “The Future of Alliances,” and in the presence of security leaders, officials and decision-makers from about 100 countries.

Al-Badri stressed the importance of reassessing international alliances in light of current changes, noting that recent developments have proven that alliances are not an absolute guarantee of security, and that their effectiveness is based on two main dimensions: the first is economic and political, based on the interdependence of interests and raising the cost of conflict, and the second is strategic, based on diversifying partnerships, strategic hedging, and preserving sovereignty and the independence of national decision-making.

The head of the agency reviewed Iraq’s vision, which is based on not engaging in competing axes, establishing balanced relations with various parties, in addition to limiting the means of power to the state, consolidating the rule of law, and strengthening security sovereignty.

He also called for strengthening regional economic integration, developing early warning mechanisms, and enhancing security and intelligence cooperation to prevent crises and transform elements of power into factors of reassurance that contribute to achieving sustainable security and peace.
