On Wednesday in Riyadh, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
According to a statement issued by Al-Zaidi’s office and received by Shafaq News Agency, the meeting included discussions on regional developments and coordination of efforts regarding them, in order to enhance the security and stability of the region.
The Prime Minister expressed the government’s condemnation of the targeting of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, and all harm inflicted on civilians and civilian facilities during conflicts, as this poses a threat to regional security and stability.
Al-Zaydi affirmed Iraq’s firm position of not allowing its territory to be used as a launching pad for any attacks or actions that affect the security of the Kingdom and the countries of the region, and its commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and respect for the sovereignty of Iraq and friendly brotherly countries.
The airport had been attacked three times in a week, the latest being last Sunday, which killed 12 people and injured 309, and the Houthis claimed responsibility for it.
According to a statement from Al-Zaidi’s office, the meeting also included a review of Iraqi-Saudi relations and ways to strengthen them in various fields, particularly enhancing security coordination between the two countries to deal with any regional security challenges. The Saudi Crown Prince affirmed the Kingdom’s support for the Iraqi government’s efforts to promote dialogue to achieve stability in the region.
Al-Zaidi arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday morning for an official visit to Saudi Arabia, as part of a Gulf tour that also includes Kuwait.
The tour comes after a planned visit to Riyadh last July was cancelled due to rapidly evolving security developments in the region, including a US bombing, in which Saudi Arabia participated, that targeted Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters in Iraq.
Iraqi-Gulf relations have been marked by anticipation and caution since the launch of regional military operations in February 2016, amid repeated accusations from countries in the region that armed factions are exploiting Iraqi territory to launch drone attacks targeting regional economic interests.
