Member of Parliament Mukhtar al-Youssef called on Sunday for political forces and blocs to abandon traditional power-sharing mechanisms and adopt the criteria of competence and scientific specialization in selecting the heads and members of the permanent parliamentary committees, in addition to electoral merit.
Al-Youssef told the Information Agency that “parliamentary committees form the backbone of legislative and oversight work within the parliament, which requires that the head and members of each committee possess the necessary expertise and competence to ensure the activation of the oversight role and the passage of stalled legislation.”
He added that “political disagreements are still preventing the individual selection of the permanent committee heads,” noting that “the current trend among the heads of parliamentary blocs focuses on the necessity of reaching a comprehensive agreement that leads to voting on all committees as a single package to avoid the collapse of consensus.”
It is worth noting that the Parliament voted on February 17 of last year to amend its internal regulations, which established 22 permanent parliamentary committees, including merging the Culture, Media, Tourism, and Antiquities Committee into a single committee.
