The sight of empty gas stations in Mosul, devoid of long queues of vehicles, coinciding with the arrival of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Sunday, sparked widespread surprise and ridicule on social media platforms, following a severe crisis that lasted for more than a month and disrupted the city’s daily life.
Activists and drivers shared videos documenting the direct and smooth refueling at the pumps without any waiting, sarcastically wondering about the secret behind the disappearance of the traffic jams that had plagued the residents for weeks, and how the scene suddenly turned into a “rosy atmosphere” as soon as the government visit was due to happen.
Informed sources in Nineveh revealed to Shafaq News Agency that the Nineveh branch of the Oil Products Distribution Company had prior knowledge of the arrival date of Al-Zaidi, which prompted the department two days ago to take urgent measures that included opening four main stations and operating them around the clock (two stations on the right side and two stations on the left), which quickly contributed to absorbing the momentum and absorbing the queues hours before the Prime Minister’s plane landed .
Mosul had been experiencing a severe fuel shortage in recent weeks, despite the implementation of the “electronic coupon” system and the fuel card that limits private vehicles to 40 liters every three days and taxis every two days.
The crisis escalated amid accusations of smuggling of oil derivatives and poor supply, prompting Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil to repeatedly promise to hold the manipulators accountable and announce an increase in the province’s allocated share from the Ministry of Oil to end the suffering, before the crisis suddenly disappeared on the ground, coinciding with the arrival of the Prime Minister.
