With advanced completion rates Iraqi ports announce the imminent commencement of operational trials for the Grand Faw PortShafaq News – Basra
The Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Abdullah Ati Abdullah, announced on Saturday that advanced completion rates have been achieved in the main projects of the Grand Faw Port, confirming that the breakwater works have been completed by 100%, the submerged tunnel has reached 98% completion, and the infrastructure works have reached 94%.

Abdullah said during a press conference that work is continuing to complete the current projects and prepare for the transition to implementing the superstructure, noting that these stages represent an important step forward in the project’s progress, and expecting to conduct port trials in the coming period.

Regarding the movement of Iraqi ports, the Director General explained that the repercussions of the Strait of Hormuz crisis have affected maritime traffic in the region in general, stressing the continuation of work to enhance cargo handling, expand storage capacities and gradually restore activity.

The Grand Faw Port is one of the most prominent strategic projects in the Iraqi maritime transport sector, due to the role it is expected to play in enhancing Iraq’s commercial and logistical capabilities, and supporting its position in regional and international maritime transport.

The Grand Faw Port is a strategic project in the far south of Iraq, located on the Faw Peninsula in Basra Governorate. It aims to transform the country into a regional trade hub by linking it to global transport networks. The foundation stone for this project was laid on April 5, 2010.

The project costs approximately $4.6 billion, covers an area of 54 square kilometers, and the port is expected to have depths of 19 meters to accommodate the largest commercial vessels.

Its handling capacity is also expected to reach 99 million tons per year, making it one of the largest ports in the Arabian Gulf and the tenth largest in the world.

In 2024, the concrete wall for the docks was completed, the foundations were prepared, and work began on the container yard, where work is proceeding in parallel, with a focus on completing the last five projects simultaneously.

During 2015, progress was made in completing the submerged tunnel, as most of its parts were installed, the pillars were fixed and submerged, which is one of the vital projects in the Grand Faw Port.

The Grand Faw Port is expected to bring about a major transformation in regional and international trade by connecting Iraq to global transport networks and facilitating the movement of goods between East and West.
