The theory that former US President Donald Trump will be reinstated as president next August has raised concerns in the US Department of Homeland Security, a senior official in the department told members of Congress.
According to Politico sources, the concerns came in a briefing that John Cohen, the department’s chief counterterrorism official, gave to the House Committee on Homeland Security.
In the briefing discussion, Democratic Representative Elisa Slotkin asked Cohen about how DHS tracks the spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories and the way rhetoric can fuel violence. It also specifically put forward the theory that Trump will be re-elected in August.
Cohen responded that the Department of Homeland Security was not aware of any specific, credible threats of violence linked to the conspiracy theory about Trump’s reinstatement, stressing that “the Department is following the discussions that are taking place online among extremist groups on this subject.”
He revealed that “the ministry officials are very concerned about this, because it feeds the false narrative that the elections were rigged, a narrative that may lead to a violent reaction from the extremists.” Ended
