Security expert Fadel Abu Ragheef confirmed on Tuesday that the next phase will witness a comprehensive review of all corruption cases in ministries, including security ministries.
Abu Ragheef told the Information Agency that “the campaign launched by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, which resulted in the arrest of a number of prominent politicians on corruption charges, will also include security institutions in the coming period.”
He explained that “during the next phase, the government, in cooperation with the judiciary, will monitor the performance of security institutions, especially those under suspicion, through committees formed by the judiciary.” He pointed out that “the budgets of security ministries are among the highest compared to other ministries, and all signed contracts, especially arms contracts and other files, will be reviewed, and appropriate measures will be taken regarding them.”
It is worth noting that in 2012, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense was embroiled in a scandal involving a dubious multi-billion dollar Russian arms deal, which led to the dismissal of military advisor Diaa al-Moussawi. This was followed by a massive waste of funds, uncovered by the Integrity Commission in 2016, in a $534 million contract for a Turkish drone system to purchase outdated equipment. This coincided with other major corruption deals, including the purchase of fake ADE 651 explosive detection devices from the British company James McCormick in 2007 for $85 million, as well as the scandal involving 86 cracked Ukrainian armored vehicles, and the squandering of $4 billion in 16 fictitious arms contracts in 2014.
