The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a new security alert on Wednesday, urging American citizens in Iraq to leave, warning of possible travel disruptions or sudden airspace closures without prior notice.

The embassy said in the warning that Iraq remains under the highest level of the US travel warning, level four, reiterating its call not to travel to Iraq “for any reason whatsoever,” and urging US citizens currently in Iraq to “leave now.”

The embassy also urged its citizens to contact airlines directly to find out the status of flights, noting the fragility of air traffic in light of the regional escalation and the increasing likelihood of airspace closures or flight disruptions in an emergency.

The US warning comes amid a sharp escalation in Washington’s rhetoric towards Tehran, after US President Donald Trump said the United States would attack Iran “very hard” if a peace agreement was not reached, accusing Tehran of slowing down negotiations and stalling in reaching a settlement.

Following this, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the United States would launch strikes against “key facilities” in Iran, a day after the US Central Command announced it had carried out what it described as “defensive” strikes against Iranian targets in response to the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
