On Tuesday, Joshua Harris, the acting US ambassador to Baghdad, praised the position of the Coordination Framework, which supports limiting the weapons of Iraqi factions and severing any ties of the Popular Mobilization Forces outside the official defense system in the country.
This came during his meeting with National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, where they discussed the overall situation at the regional and international levels and the latest developments in the region. The meeting included joint praise for the Coordination Framework decision supporting the government’s measures to restrict weapons to the state, with emphasis on the framework’s statement as a roadmap for the country’s stability and for avoiding anything that could harm Iraq’s security and stability.
According to a statement issued by the National Security Advisory, the meeting discussed the continuation of cooperation and partnership between Iraq and the United States, and the development of bilateral relations in accordance with the common interests of the two countries.
For his part, Al-Araji affirmed to the US Chargé d’Affaires Iraq’s firm stance on the ongoing conflicts in the region, and Baghdad’s support for the peaceful path in accordance with international norms and diplomacy.
For his part, Harris reiterated the support of the United States government and President Donald Trump for the Iraqi government, stressing that Washington supports an independent Iraq with full sovereignty, and that the economy and development should be the driving force for the state and its people, describing the Coordination Framework statement as a “qualitative leap” in the path to consolidating independence and sovereignty for the future of Iraq.
This position coincides with the authorization granted by the Coordination Framework, which includes the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq, on Monday evening, to the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali al-Zaidi, to take the decisions and measures necessary to preserve the country’s higher interests, while announcing its support for the project to restrict weapons to the state and to separate the Popular Mobilization Forces from all political, partisan, and social frameworks.
