The U.S. State Department confirmed on Friday that it had approved a possible sale of Bell 412 helicopters to Iraq for an estimated $150 million.
The US State Department announced last Monday its approval of a deal to sell Iraq Bell 412EPX and Bell 407M helicopters, along with related military equipment, worth $800 million.
The ministry explained in a statement that the deal will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by “helping to enhance the security of a strategic partner.”
She added that the helicopters and equipment will contribute to developing Iraq’s capabilities in the areas of transportation, reconnaissance, and targeting objectives from the air to the ground, thus enhancing Iraq’s ability to deal with future threats.
She indicated that Bell Textron would be the prime contractor in the anticipated deal between the United States and Iraq.
This deal comes in conjunction with plans to restructure the US military presence and withdraw troops on September 30, to enhance Iraq’s reliance on its own capabilities in combating terrorism, and also coincides with the Iraqi government’s plans to restrict weapons to the state.
