An informed source revealed on Wednesday the withdrawal of the so-called engineering battalion of US forces from Harir Air Base near Erbil, marking the first publicly announced withdrawal of these forces.
The source told Al-Maalomah that “the US engineering battalion began its withdrawal at dawn, heading in a convoy towards US bases in Syria, a move reflecting Washington’s decision to withdraw technical and engineering capabilities from the base.” The source
added that “this step may precede a reduction in the number of soldiers and battalions present at the base in the coming period, and the presence may reach a symbolic level by May 2026,” noting that “the withdrawal reflects the US forces’ intention to reposition their capabilities outside of Iraq, particularly towards Syria.”
