The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it has begun transferring thousands of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq.
CENTCOM said in a statement: “We have begun a new mission to transfer ISIS detainees from northeast Syria to Iraq, in order to ensure that terrorists remain in secure detention centers.”
She added, “The transfer began in conjunction with the successful transfer by US forces of 150 ISIS fighters who were being held at a detention center in Hasakah, Syria, to a secure location in Iraq. The total number of ISIS detainees to be transferred from Syria to Iraqi-controlled detention centers is expected to reach 7,000.”
“We are coordinating closely with our regional partners, including the Iraqi government, and appreciate their role in ensuring the ultimate defeat of ISIS,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, according to the statement. “Facilitating the orderly and secure transfer of ISIS detainees is critical to preventing any escape that could pose a direct threat to the United States and regional security.”
