On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a security alert covering all of Iraq, urging American citizens to exercise extreme caution, remain calm, limit their movements, and stay in their residences when necessary.

The embassy said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “reports are still circulating about the detection of missiles, drones, or projectiles in Iraqi airspace,” noting that it is monitoring active threats targeting American interests in the country, including restaurants, companies, and individuals.

The statement added that the southern bank of the July 14 Bridge in Baghdad is witnessing anti-American demonstrations, as well as calls for demonstrations in various parts of Iraq, warning of the possibility that the gatherings could turn into acts of violence, given the “complex and rapidly changing” security situation.

The embassy explained that it had instructed all its employees who were able to work from home to do so until further notice, and that consular operations, including routine services for American citizens, had been suspended.

She confirmed that the US State Department is maintaining its travel warning for Iraq at Level 4 (Do Not Travel), urging US citizens not to travel to Iraq for any reason, and to review their personal security plans if they are already in the country, while not relying on the US government for departure or evacuation operations.

The statement indicated that Iraqi airspace is currently closed and may be reopened or closed again within a short timeframe. Travelers should contact their airlines for the latest information. The statement also noted that the embassy in Baghdad and the US consulate general in Erbil remain open, with movement restricted to essential operations only.
