The US chargé d’affaires in Iraq, Steven Fagin, confirmed on Saturday that the relationship between Baghdad and Washington is on the verge of a “major development”.
“When Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi visited Washington last summer, he had a mandate from the Iraqi people to build a sovereign, secure, and prosperous Iraq,” Fagin said at a conference, according to the embassy. “He stated that today’s Iraq is not seen as yesterday’s Iraq… but rather as a country full of great opportunities.”
He continued, ” President Trump has aspirations regarding bilateral relations, a fruitful partnership with the Iraqi people based on real and tangible results.”
The agreements signed during Al-Zaidi’s visit included the energy, healthcare, technology, and financial sectors, with a total value of $60 billion.
He emphasized, “During my time as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Mission to Iraq, my goal is clear: to seek to deepen economic opportunities and achieve accomplishments that benefit both our countries.”
He noted that “we are on the cusp of a transformation in the nature of the relationship between the United States and Iraq, given our shared interest in expanding trade opportunities.”
He added: “Together, we can and will continue this fruitful partnership, achieving accomplishments and real, tangible results to ensure the prosperity of the United States and Iraq.”
