The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) confirmed on Thursday its continued support for the Iraqi government through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Document (2025–2029), which it described as a “new chapter.”

UNAMI said in a post on the X platform, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, that “with the conclusion of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the United Nations team in Iraq continues its work under the leadership of the United Nations Resident Coordinator.”

She added that “the United Nations team is working in close partnership with the Government of Iraq to support national development priorities, through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Document (2025–2029) which was signed on December 25, 2025.”

She noted that “this transition represents a clear step towards long-term and sustainable development, led by national leadership and based on stronger institutions and effective partnerships.”

She concluded by saying: “From supporting economic diversification, climate action and water resource management, to promoting social protection, governance and sustainable solutions, the United Nations continues its role as a trusted and committed partner in supporting the Government of Iraq.”

At the end of last December, Iraq brought to a close the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which had lasted for more than two decades.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced on Saturday, December 20, that it had signed the documents for handing over its compound in Baghdad to the federal government, prior to the end of its mandate.

The mission stated at the time, in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that the Deputy Special Representative for Iraq for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance, Claudio Cordone, signed on behalf of the mission, and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Mohammed Bahr Al-Uloom, signed on behalf of the Government of Iraq.

She added: “This event is the culmination of close cooperation between the two sides over several months, and represents the transition from UNAMI to the United Nations Country Team in a new chapter of the partnership between the United Nations and Iraq.”

UNAMI was established in 2003 by a Security Council resolution, and its mandate was officially set to end on December 31, 2025, following a final extension and at the request of the Iraqi government.
