US President’s envoy Thomas Barrack informed Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein of the US vision regarding the formation of the Iraqi government during a meeting held in Baghdad. The meeting addressed this issue at length and reviewed relevant viewpoints, while Hussein stressed that the formation of the government is an “internal matter,” taking into account the opinions of international partners, particularly the United States, as it is an allied country.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the meeting also addressed bilateral relations between Iraq and America, and ways to enhance coordination and joint cooperation, especially in the field of combating terrorism.

The American side expressed its appreciation for the Iraqi government’s move to transfer ISIS members from detention centers abroad to Iraqi prisons, as part of strengthening Iraq’s sovereignty and fulfilling its legal responsibilities. Hussein confirmed the continuation of communication with a number of countries to transfer their citizens involved in terrorism cases to their countries of origin, appreciating the Turkish government’s agreement to receive its citizens among these elements.

The two sides also discussed the agreement concluded between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the transitional government in Syria, stressing their support for the agreement and the need to adhere to its implementation due to its impact on enhancing security and stability.

The meeting also touched on Iranian-American relations and the course of negotiations between the two sides, as Hussein warned of the danger of any potential war breaking out and its repercussions on the region, stressing Iraq’s support for the peaceful path and its endorsement of the upcoming round of negotiations scheduled to be held in Geneva with Omani mediation.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of continued communication and coordination during the next phase until the process of forming the Iraqi government is completed.

Barak arrived in Baghdad on Sunday evening and began his schedule by meeting directly with Sudani, amid a major escalation in the region, especially the American threats to strike Iran.

Barak said in a post on the X platform: “I discussed with the Iraqi Prime Minister the goals of building a future that aligns with President Trump’s plan for peace in the region.”

Tom Barrack told the Sudanese that “the presence of effective leadership that adopts policies to promote stability in Iraq and among its people is essential to achieving common goals.”

On Sunday, Al-Sudani discussed with Barak bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, the general situation in the region, and Iraq’s efforts to support regional stability, and the stability of Syria in particular.

The meeting witnessed the exchange of views on preventing regional escalation, the importance of resorting to dialogue and diplomatic paths to resolve conflicts, in addition to exploring opportunities for economic cooperation and supporting comprehensive development that promotes long-term stability.

Al-Sudani stressed the need to address the deep-rooted problems by developing radical solutions to their causes, and to prevent aggression and violations of the sovereignty of countries and peoples in the region.
