US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Washington does not want to involve the Kurds in the ongoing war against Iran, in a notable reversal of a previous position in which he expressed support for a Kurdish cross-border move.
He added in a statement to reporters that the Kurdish fighters had shown a willingness to help, but he said that involving them would only complicate the situation further.
This stance came just two days after he said it was “great” that Iranian Kurdish forces based in Iraq were crossing into Iran to launch attacks on security forces there.
Meanwhile, Trump considered Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s apology to neighboring countries targeted by Iranian attacks as a victory for the United States and its allies, saying that Iran “apologized and surrendered to its neighbors in the Middle East,” adding that this shift would not have happened without “the continuous American and Israeli attack.”
He also noted that “the shape of Iran’s map after the end of the operations cannot be confirmed, and it is likely that it will not remain the same.”
Regarding the possibility of a US ground intervention in the war, which has entered its second week, Trump said: “If we decide to intervene on the ground, the enemy will have suffered destruction that prevents them from fighting on the ground.”
Trump also pointed out that the United States had gotten rid of the first and third tier leaders in Iran, and that there would soon be new leaders. He considered that if Russia’s support for Iran was proven, it meant that Moscow was “not doing a good job at all because Tehran’s current situation is not good,” he said.
