On Thursday, US President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of resuming intensive bombing of Iran after the US midterm elections.
Trump told Time magazine: “I wanted the Iran war to be short at the beginning, but now I will continue the mission to the end.”
Trump continued: “What I rejected at the beginning of negotiations with Iran, I will reject today,” explaining that “Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz for a short time, but control is ours now.”
He noted that “his country is experiencing a slight shortage in stockpiles of some munitions,” adding that “Iran’s war munitions cost less than what we earn from Venezuelan oil in a month.”
Trump noted that “we will soon restore the strategic petroleum reserve to its previous levels.”
These statements come at a time when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed that Iran will never evade dialogue with the United States, while Tehran studies the American response to the terms of the negotiations.
Reuters quoted the official earlier as saying that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Qatari mediators in Doha last Tuesday and received the United States’ response to a proposed seven-day confidence-building plan, which he will discuss in Tehran on Wednesday.
The seven-day Iranian plan calls for a cessation of all hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports.
Under the plan, Tehran would then allow the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened to navigation, and the two sides would resume negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
