On Tuesday evening, US President Donald Trump asserted that the student protests in France were “nothing less than an out-of-control mass migration,” linking them to Islam rather than a school crisis.
Trump said in remarks monitored by Shafaq News Agency, “This is not a matter about schools, but rather about Islam and its desire to take over a country that was once great.”
Trump’s remarks come at a time when France is experiencing a wave of student protests.
According to the European channel “Euronews”, the movements began on September 17 in Créteil, in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, where teachers and students protested against staff shortages at a high school, and then spread to different regions of the country.
The protesters say their complaints focus on the dilapidated state of some school buildings, overcrowded classrooms, and staff shortages, especially in working-class neighborhoods.
According to data from the French Ministry of Education, 589 high schools out of approximately 3,700 experienced disruptions on Monday, after the number approached 800 schools on Friday.
According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, police arrested more than 5,000 people last week, 85% of whom were minors.
Since the start of the movement, 215 students, more than 700 security personnel, and about one hundred education sector workers have been injured.
The French Interior Ministry estimated the number of demonstrators on Tuesday at about 256,000 across the country, including 56,000 in Paris, while the Union of High School Students estimated the participation at about 450,000.
On the political front, the French government accuses the left-wing “France Unbowed” party of fueling the unrest, while the party rejects these accusations and accuses the authorities of reducing the protest movement to itself.
