Transportation formally signed with Daewoo to implement the Faw Port project ... and important details{International: Al Furat News} Iraq agreed on a deal worth 2.625 billion dollars with “Daewoo” Engineering and Construction, South Korea, today, Wednesday, to build the first phase of the Faw commodity port, which it is planning in the south of the country.
Under the contract signed in Baghdad by representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and the South Korean company, Daewoo will undertake the construction work, which includes building five berths for unloading ships and a container yard.
Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, told “Reuters” on the sidelines of the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the Ministry of Transportation that Daewoo will also undertake the dredging and drilling work to establish a navigation channel.
Al-Fartousi said that the first phase will allow the port to receive three million containers, and that all construction work is scheduled to be completed within approximately four years.
At present, Iraq has to rely mainly on the port of Umm Qasr in the south to receive ships transporting primary goods, which is the port located at the front of the strategic Gulf waterway.
The Faw port will be deeper, which will allow it to receive the largest container ships.
