The spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Salam Al-Zubaidi, revealed a set of criteria approved by the coordination framework for selecting the next prime minister, noting that these specifications may not apply to some of the names put forward, including the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the coordination framework has set several key points regarding the personality of the next prime minister, most notably that he should not have a political bloc within parliament, and that he should not run for the next elections, whether for the House of Representatives or provincial councils, in addition to forming a committee within the framework to follow up on the performance of the government and monitor the work of the prime minister continuously.”
He added that “these standards aim to ensure the independence of executive decision-making, prevent the interference of partisan interests with the work of the government, and reduce political pressures that may hinder the implementation of the government program.”
Al-Zubaidi questioned the extent to which these specifications apply to al-Maliki’s personality, saying: “The question remains whether these criteria are consistent with al-Maliki’s political nature, and whether he will actually accept being under these conditions, which will be the focus of future discussions within the framework.”
He explained that “the upcoming meeting of the Coordination Framework will witness in-depth discussions on these points, and may be pivotal in determining the features of the next stage, whether in terms of choosing the candidate or the form of political understandings.”
Al-Zubaidi warned that “failure to reach an agreement within the framework could lead to an internal split with serious repercussions for the political landscape,” explaining that “any crack in this alliance would be a negative indicator that could affect the stability of the entire political process.”
