The US Embassy urges its citizens to leave Iraq immediately and outlines land travel optionsThe U.S. Embassy in Iraq issued a new security alert on Thursday, March 12, 2026, including updated guidance on departure options, warning of significant threats targeting public safety, U.S. interests, and critical infrastructure in the country.

The US Embassy stated in the alert that “armed groups have launched attacks targeting US citizens, energy companies, hotels frequented by foreigners, and facilities with US ties throughout Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region,” noting the risk of kidnapping.

The embassy urged American citizens to exercise extreme caution, maintain a low profile, and stay away from gatherings or places associated with the United States, stressing that it is closely monitoring the situation to provide necessary updates for decisions regarding their safety.

The US Embassy indicated that the safety and security of American citizens is a top priority for the US administration and the State Department, calling on them to review their personal security situations. It stated that leaving Iraq as soon as possible when it is safe is the best option for many, while directing those who chose to stay to prepare to stay in safe places for long periods and to provide sufficient stocks of food, water and medicine.

Regarding departure options, the embassy’s alert explained that the airspace is currently closed and no commercial flights are operating at the moment, noting that there are available land routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Although most land crossings are currently open, they may close without prior notice. The alert urged Americans to seriously consider departing via these routes if it is safe for them, with the expectation of long delays and the possibility of airspace closures in neighboring countries.
