The U.S. Department of Defense has sent the aircraft carrier “Theodore Roosevelt” and its battle group to the Middle East, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper explained that the carrier and its group left San Diego last Sunday, with about 10,000 soldiers on board, and that they are sailing towards the region to join the aircraft carriers “George W. Bush” and “George Washington” that are there.
It is noted that an American official reported yesterday, Thursday, that the aircraft carrier “Roosevelt” had left the San Diego base with its strike group, heading towards the vicinity of Iran in the Middle East.
The official told Al Jazeera that the Marine Expeditionary Force “Maicon Island” left San Diego last Monday, heading to the region, with more than 2,000 Marines on board.
He added that three aircraft carriers and two landing groups would be deployed around Iran by the end of November, noting that the buildup of these forces in the Middle East would give American leaders many options for dealing with Iran.
This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of returning to intensive bombing of Iran after the US midterm elections.
Trump told Time magazine: “I wanted the Iran war to be short at the beginning, but now I will continue the mission to the end,” stressing that “what I rejected at the beginning of the negotiations with Iran I will reject today,” explaining that “Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz for a short time, but control is ours now.”
