The Russian bank Sovcombank said in a statement published on Monday that the United Nations opened an account in a Russian bank and began conducting banking operations in Russian rubles.
The statement said, Sovcombank has applied to the US Treasury Department for a license allowing payments in dollars, to pay membership fees to various international non-profit organizations, including the United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative. Before obtaining the license at the request of Sovcombank, the United Nations opened an account in a Russian bank and began for the first time to conduct banking operations in rubles.
Since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, Sovcombank, a general purpose bank listed among the 10 largest Russian banks in terms of assets, has been included in the sanctions list imposed by the United States and other Western countries.
Since the start of the special Russian military operation in Ukraine, on February 24 of last year, the United States, the European Union, and other countries have announced the imposition of sanctions on Russian companies and citizens, and the freezing of Russian government assets in a number of central banks abroad.
The US Department of Justice had previously taken a decision allowing the transfer of confiscated and frozen Russian funds to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and allocating them to support Ukraine, which observers considered a matter that raises questions about the credibility of the Western financial system.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West, and will not be successful, pointing out that the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy, and that the West is looking to destroy the lives of millions of people.
Putin stressed that seizing money legally acquired by Russian entrepreneurs in countries unfriendly to Russia is beyond all limits.
