Iraqi ports complete backfilling of areas in the container yard at the Grand Faw PortShafaq News/ The Iraqi General Company for Ports announced on Thursday the completion of the reclamation of flooded areas within the container yard construction project, which is considered one of the most important projects in the Grand Faw Port project.

The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The company implementing the Grand Faw Port project has completed the reclamation of the flooded areas in the container yard, which represents significant progress in the project’s implementation.”

He added that “work has now moved to the mainland so that the yard can be prepared to a level that is compatible with the five platforms,” explaining that “more than (10.5) million cubic meters of (space) material of various types were used for backfilling to a depth of up to (7) meters, while about (3) million cubic meters remain to complete the paving of the layers of the last section of the yard.”

He explained that “the container yard extends over an area of (2,000) meters in length, (600) meters in width, and has a capacity of up to (3.5) million containers annually, making it one of the largest facilities within the project with a completion rate of 89%.”

Al-Fartousi had previously told Shafaq News Agency last February that the completion rate of the container handling yard project, one of the five infrastructure projects in the Grand Faw Port, had reached 86%. The yard has an area of 2,000 cubic meters, with a length and width of 600 meters, as part of the first phase of the project. Water has been buried beneath it to a depth of seven meters .

He continued, “The yard’s capacity is 3.5 million containers annually. Located in the port basin behind the five quays, it is the largest container handling yard in Iraqi ports. This project is part of the infrastructure development plan in Iraqi ports, which will enhance Iraq’s capabilities in maritime transport and international trade .”

The Grand Faw Port is a strategic project in the far south of Iraq, located on the Faw Peninsula in Basra Governorate. It aims to transform the country into a regional trade hub by connecting it to global transportation networks .

The project costs approximately $4.6 billion and covers an area of 54 square kilometers .

Its annual capacity is expected to reach 99 million tons, making it one of the largest ports in the Arabian Gulf and the tenth largest in the world .

The port’s depth is expected to be 19 metres, to accommodate the largest commercial vessels .

In 2024, the concrete wall for the quays was completed, the piers were prepared, and work began on the container yard. Work is proceeding in parallel, with a focus on completing the last five projects simultaneously .
