Burhan Sheikh Raouf, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, confirmed on Monday that the Patriotic Union welcomes any initiatives aimed at ending the political deadlock in the Kurdistan Region, stressing the party’s readiness to hold meetings at any time and reach a consensus formula to form a balanced national government.
Sheikh Raouf told Al-Maalouma, “Our doors are open and our hands are extended for dialogue in order to reach a formula for forming a national, consensual, and balanced government that leads the Kurdistan Region and ensures that everyone receives their due rights, without discrimination between the governorates of the region, and in a way that achieves balance in all areas.”
He added that “there are serious attempts between the two main parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, to hold a session of the regional parliament as soon as possible,” indicating that “the most prominent obstacles are the existence of serious disagreements that have led to a delay in forming the government during the past period, which has been close to two years since the last legislative elections in the region.”
Sheikh Raouf explained that “the disagreements are centered around the nature of the political partnership, entitlements, sovereign positions, and ministries between the two main parties,” noting that “the new alliance between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the New Generation Movement has brought the number of seats close to those of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which must be taken into consideration.”
He added that “the demand of the new alliance is for a balance and a real partnership in managing the region,” noting that “the federal government has not moved as required towards Kurdistan to melt the iceberg of disagreements between the two main parties.”
He noted that “a number of political parties and forces in Baghdad have tried to ease tensions and propose initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between the Kurdish parties,” calling on the federal government, the prime minister, the three presidencies, and all political forces in Iraq to “exert more efforts to reconcile viewpoints and end the political deadlock in the Kurdistan Region.”
