The Union of Agricultural Associations in Diyala revealed on Friday that it had sent what it called a “three-point memo” to the government of Ali al-Zaidi, aimed at protecting local agricultural crops as the peak of the marketing season approaches. Raad Maghamis al-Tamimi, head of the union’s Diyala branch, told Al-Maalomah that “Diyala is an agricultural province, and this sector provides a livelihood for tens of thousands of families.” He noted that “with the arrival of the last third of May, many agricultural crops have begun to be marketed, and we will witness peak production for important crops in the coming weeks.”
He added that “the Union of Agricultural Associations sent a memo containing three points to the al-Zaidi government, the most important of which is controlling the entry of imported agricultural crops to prevent flooding of local markets, which would negatively impact national production.”
He explained that “controlling border crossings and allocating more space for local production will ensure real benefits for farmers, creating a balance between revenues and costs, thus making the agricultural season profitable rather than a loss.” He emphasized that “this will ensure the sustainability of local production, which is a crucial pillar of the country’s food security policy.”
Al-Tamimi pointed out that “Diyala has suffered in recent years from the flooding of markets with imported crops, which has led to significant losses for farmers in previous agricultural seasons.”
