An official source in Anbar revealed on Friday that the Sunni Council meeting at the home of Speaker of Parliament Hebat al-Halbousi failed to reach a consensus on rejecting the Coordination Framework candidate, Nouri al-Maliki.

The source explained to Al-Maalouma Agency that “the head of the Progress Alliance, Muhammad al-Halbousi, did not succeed in presenting his project rejecting the nomination of al-Maliki, after the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, objected and was absent from the meeting in protest against adopting a position hostile to the forces of the Coordination Framework, which led to the outbreak of disputes and the end of the meeting without political understandings.”

The source added that “the council rejected al-Halbousi’s request for a consensus on rejecting al-Maliki,” noting that “the majority of council leaders emphasized non-interference in the mechanism for selecting the prime minister, and that the council will vote according to the coordinating framework’s selection without any veto power over the candidate, including al-Maliki.”
