The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and outgoing Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, arrived this morning, Wednesday, at Ain al-Assad base, west of Anbar province.

The visit came at the start of Al-Sudani’s field tour to assess the readiness of the armed forces holding the Iraqi-Syrian border strip, according to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency.

Al-Sudani was briefed on the readiness levels and field movement of the deployed formations and units. He also witnessed the takeoff of a squadron of four F-16 fighter jets, as part of a tactical exercise for reconnaissance, surveillance, and carrying out patrol and response missions.

Iraq had taken full possession of the base days earlier from the international coalition forces fighting ISIS, in accordance with the agreement concluded between Iraq and the United States in 2024.

Al-Sudani also visited the Iraqi-Syrian border in the Al-Qaim area, as part of a field tour to monitor the readiness of our armed forces units holding the Iraqi-Syrian border strip in the governorates of Anbar and Nineveh.

According to another statement received by the agency, Al-Sudani chaired a security meeting at the headquarters of the Seventh Division, which holds the border strip in Al-Qaim, in the presence of the Minister of Interior, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, the commanders of the ground and air forces, the commander of the border forces, the Director of Military Intelligence, and a number of field commanders.

He listened to a briefing and detailed explanations presented by the Minister of Interior, the Commander of the Ground Forces, the Commander of the Border Forces, and the Director of Military Intelligence, which included procedures for securing the Iraqi-Syrian border, the existing challenges, and the high readiness and military capabilities of the forces, enabling them to confront any risks or security threats.

Al-Sudani pointed to the importance of continuing the efforts of the various military and security units, noting the high confidence in the various branches of the armed and security forces for the great victories and security achievements they have made that have contributed to supporting stability throughout Iraq.
