The spokesman for the Reconstruction and Development bloc, Firas Al-Muslawi, confirmed on Saturday that the meeting of the leaders of the coordination framework scheduled to be held today will put an end to the ongoing dispute over the “two-thirds mechanism” for choosing the prime minister candidate.
Al-Muslawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “The current discussions are focused on choosing between a two-thirds majority vote of the leaders or a two-thirds majority of parliamentary seats within the framework to resolve the debate and approve the candidate’s name.”
He added, “There is a clear political will among the framework’s leaders to finalize this matter according to the agreed-upon mechanism, to ensure the formation of the new government within the specified timeframes and without delay.”
Nour Al-Atabi, a member of the Badr parliamentary bloc, suggested on Saturday that a “consensus” figure with majority approval would be chosen during today’s meeting, emphasizing that the unity of the coordinating framework remains the “safety valve” for the political process, especially given the sensitive regional circumstances that necessitate a fully empowered government that meets the aspirations of all national components.
