The Iraqi parliament voted on Wednesday to postpone the agenda of today’s session and turn it into a general discussion session regarding the decision to raise the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar, while it set a special session for tomorrow, Thursday, to host the governor of the Central Bank and the Minister of Finance to discuss the reasons for the decision and its repercussions.
The media office of the House of Representatives stated in a brief statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the council voted to postpone the session’s agenda and convert it into a general discussion session regarding the decision to raise the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar.
In this context, MP Jaafar al-Zamili, from the Badr parliamentary bloc, told Shafaq News Agency that the Speaker of Parliament directed that the Governor of the Central Bank and the Minister of Finance be hosted in tomorrow’s session to learn about the reasons for raising the dollar exchange rate and the repercussions of the decision, as well as to discuss ways to address it.
He added that the council voted to set tomorrow, Thursday, as the date for a special session to discuss the rise in oil prices and its impact on the Iraqi public, indicating that the council adjourned its current session until tomorrow, Thursday.
In addition, MP Aziz Nasser said during a press conference he held in Parliament, which was attended by a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, that the members of the Council canceled the session’s agenda after a request from the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies to allocate a session to discuss the reasons for the rise in the dollar exchange rate and its repercussions.
Nasser explained that the members of the House of Representatives do not know how to raise the dollar exchange rate, and the Central Bank was supposed to inform the House about the reasons for the decision and its effects on prices.
He added that “national and moral responsibility” requires reservations about the way the dollar exchange rate is changed, questioning what the citizen’s fault is regarding what is happening in the economy and its effects on the market.
Nasser indicated that the parliamentary session dedicated to hosting the Central Bank Governor and the Minister of Finance will witness the presentation of the deputies’ positions and a discussion of what happened and the repercussions of raising the exchange rate.
Earlier, Hassan al-Asadi, head of the National Approach bloc, called on the government to reverse its decision to raise the dollar exchange rate and cancel it quickly, warning of its repercussions on various segments of society.
In this context, MP Saba Al-Saadi, from the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, said during a press conference held in the parliament building and attended by a Shafaq News correspondent, that what is happening in the dollar exchange rate is a “direct result of the inadequacy of fiscal and monetary policy,” considering that the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank bear responsibility for what she described as “clear confusion.”
Meanwhile, MP Suzan Al-Saad, a member of the parliamentary industry committee, announced that she had collected more than 50 signatures from members of parliament to demand that the agenda of today’s session be stopped and dedicated to discussing the decision to raise the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar.
This comes after the adoption of new exchange rates, according to which the purchase price of the dollar from the Ministry of Finance was set at 1500 dinars, and its sale to banks at 1510 dinars, while its sale price to the public was set at 1520 dinars, with the previous price to be discontinued starting from the beginning of the work day on October 7, 2026.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Central Bank of Iraq described the decision to raise the exchange rate of the dinar against the US dollar as a “strategic step” to enhance financial stability, reassuring citizens and the economic sector of the adequacy and strength of its foreign reserves.
