Shafaq News – Baghdad
A prominent leader in the Shiite National Movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, commented on Tuesday on the nomination of Iraqi businessman Ali al-Zaidi for the premiership by the Coordination Framework.
The leader told Shafaq News Agency that “the movement and its leadership are still committed to the decision to boycott political work, and there are no secret political dialogues with any political party regarding the next stage or arrangements for forming the new government.”
According to the leader, since announcing its withdrawal from the political scene, the movement has remained firm in its position and has not made any secret political contacts or understandings with any internal or external party regarding the political process.
He added that “the Shiite National Movement has no connection whatsoever to the nomination of Ali al-Zidi for the position of Prime Minister by the Coordination Framework, and was not a party to this matter in any way.”
The prominent leader in the movement affirmed that “the personal and social relationship between the movement’s leadership and Ali al-Zaydi is good, and this is something that is not related to political positions or official support. Having a good relationship does not mean adopting his candidacy or supporting him politically during the next stage.”
The leader concluded his statement by saying that “the movement is still insisting on the option of boycotting and not interfering in current political issues, including those related to government formation talks or the distribution of positions, and any news that speaks of its return to political understandings or its support for any candidate at the present time is baseless.”
The Coordination Framework announced yesterday, Monday, the nomination of Ali al-Zidi for the presidency of the Council of Ministers, while praising the positions of (al-Sudani and al-Maliki) for withdrawing their nomination.
Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi affirmed on Monday that confronting internal and external challenges, assessing risks, and seizing opportunities will be among the “priorities” of his government program, noting that Iraq’s economic capabilities provide an opportunity to manage a capable state.
