Informed sources revealed serious information about what they called the “real estate deal of the century” that took place during the era of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. It involved distributing plots of land in the Al-Qadisiyah area, which is considered one of the most prestigious and expensive residential areas in the capital, Baghdad, to political, party, and journalistic figures close to the government, in a move described as a blatant exploitation of positions, manipulation of powers, and squandering of public funds to buy loyalties.
Sources told Al-Maalomah that residents of the Qadisiyah district confirmed the existence of suspicious land allocations granted as “presidential gifts” to influential figures at nominal prices that are completely disproportionate to their true value. These individuals exploited their influence in the previous government to seize state-owned properties.
The sources added that the biggest scandal lies in the figures themselves: each plot was registered for a paltry sum of no more than 67,000 Iraqi dinars (representing a small administrative registration fee), while the plot’s area is approximately 200 square meters, and its true market value is estimated at more than 1.2 billion dinars. This means the squandering of enormous public funds and their distribution to cronies for a pittance.
The sources indicated that “this economic and planning crime did not take into account the safety of the capital, as the distributed lands are located within areas designated for public benefit such as parks and afforestation, and even more dangerous than that, there are main gas and electricity lines and pipes passing under parts of them, which threatens the infrastructure and the lives of the original inhabitants.”
The sources pointed out that “some of those who obtained those lands began to encroach on the area randomly, without any legal or planning considerations,” stressing that “this file represents conclusive evidence of the squandering of the people’s money for narrow factional interests.”
The sources called on “oversight bodies, foremost among them the Integrity Commission and the Public Prosecution, to launch an urgent and immediate investigation to recover these prohibited lands, reveal the full list of beneficiaries, including politicians and media figures, and hold accountable all those involved in facilitating this suspicious deal.”
