While popular and political circles await the white smoke of “consensus” to announce a resolution to the presidential issue, the uncertainty of postponement has returned to cast its shadow over the general scene, laden with signs of parliamentary and political concern that a national constitutional entitlement has become an arena for open gambles by some regional and international powers.
This delay, which can no longer be explained as a mere technicality, is now raising serious questions about the nature of the pressures exerted behind the scenes to keep the position of the guardian of the constitution hostage to deals made from outside the country.
The question remains: will Parliament succeed in breaking free from the grip of external influences and proceed to a truly Iraqi session, or will these “gambles” continue to be the outcome and the driving force behind this ongoing drama of postponement?
For his part, Ahmed al-Harki, a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, expressed his party’s concern on Sunday about the possibility of postponing the presidential election session scheduled for April 11, revealing that there are political forces that are making the resolution contingent on external factors.
Al-Harki told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “There are serious concerns that the upcoming session to elect the president will be postponed indefinitely.” He pointed out that “some political blocs are waiting to see how regional developments and the war with Iran will unfold, which will negatively impact the scheduled date.”
He added, “Linking constitutional obligations to foreign policy issues will lead to confusion,” warning that “continuing the postponement will have dire consequences and direct repercussions on the political, security, and economic landscape of the country.”
It is worth noting that the Federal Supreme Court is preparing to consider, on April 14th, a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of Parliament’s continued operation after its failure to elect a president within the constitutional deadlines.
Meanwhile, informed political sources, as reported by Al-Maalomah, confirmed that some parties are engaged in intensive efforts to exploit the situation to impose a formula that does not meet national aspirations but rather serves agendas that view Iraq’s political stability as a threat to their interests or a loss of leverage.
This growing concern didn’t stop at the postponement itself, but extended to fears of plunging the country into a “systematic vacuum,” a scenario warned against by legal and political experts who assert that delaying a presidential election is an attempt to pressure national forces and install figures who might be easily manipulated on matters of sovereignty and international agreements.
