Iraqi President Nizar Amidi predicted on Saturday that the remaining ministerial posts in the current government cabinet would be decided soon, indicating that there was an agreement on some portfolios and only two or three ministries remained, while stressing the need to protect political and security stability in the country.
This came during his participation in a discussion session within the proceedings of the “Eighth Baghdad Dialogue” conference, organized by the Iraqi Institute for Dialogue, in the presence of a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency.
Amidi said during the session that “the political forces are keen to complete the cabinet, especially as we are going through a difficult and dangerous phase in the region,” stressing that “the failure of this government means the failure of everyone in Iraq,” while noting that there is no specific date for resolving the issue definitively.
Regarding regional developments, the President warned of the difficult economic consequences for the country, noting that Iraq would be among the most affected countries after Iran if the escalation continues, given the economic interdependence and total reliance on oil.
He explained that the security situation has proven fragile with the expansion of the conflict and the targeting of Iraqi lands by multiple parties, revealing that the Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, during his recent visit to Baghdad, was informed of the extent of the damage inflicted on Iraq as a result of the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the naval blockade imposed there, due to its direct impact on Iraqi oil exports and securing employee salaries.
Amidi also criticized Iraq’s failure to rely on a national oil carrier and its continued almost total dependence on international companies, noting that Tehran is seeking to reach a comprehensive agreement that ends the war and lifts the embargo, while Washington is seeking to calm the situation and not prolong the conflict.
Regarding the foreign presence and the restriction of weapons, Amidi revealed that the missions of the international coalition in Iraq will end on September 30, based on the request of the Iraqi government, which had previously invited the coalition to confront the “ISIS” organization, stressing Baghdad’s rejection of any targeting of the Gulf states or the use of Iraqi territory as a launching point for attacks.
