Wafa Muhammad Karim, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), confirmed on Thursday that the party will appeal the parliamentary session that granted confidence to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s government, emphasizing that several issues were raised regarding the session’s proceedings.
Karim explained to Al-Maalouma that the most prominent of these issues concerned the delay in presenting the sovereign ministries for a vote, considering this a violation of constitutional procedures within the session.
He added that the KDP is disappointed by the failure to pass the reconstruction and housing portfolio during the confidence vote session, noting that the Speaker of Parliament deliberately did this and did not allow sufficient time for counting the votes, as the process took only a few seconds before the announcement that a majority had not been achieved.
Karim pointed out that the way some political forces are dealing with constitutional entitlements from a self-serving perspective poses serious challenges to the political process at a time when the country needs genuine consensus to confront regional and internal crises.
Karim revealed that the Democratic Party will work to replace its nominee for the Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing after the rejection of its previous nominee, Ribaz Hamlan, while seeking to reach new understandings with political blocs to ensure the nominee’s approval along with the other pending ministries.
The session to grant confidence to Ali al-Zaidi’s government saw no vote on several ministries, including Planning, Culture, Reconstruction and Housing, Higher Education, and Interior. Numerous political accusations were raised regarding the management of the session and the method of counting votes, in addition to criticism of the failure to use electronic voting.
